Thrive to Five: We Need Help From Parents Like You!

Information about serving on Policy Council

Dear Families,

We know Thrive to Five relies on the guidance of parents to run a program that meets the needs of the community, children, and parents in a County as diverse as Lancaster!

Parent Committee vs. Policy Council

  • The Parent Committee is what happens at the classroom level with family liaisons & the classroom teachers.
  • Policy Council is what happens at the program level with parents from other classrooms throughout the county, community members, and program leadership.

What’s in it for you?

  • You get an early learning program tailored to the needs of families.
  • You become a role model in volunteering for your friends and family.
  • You are exposed to our diverse group of parents, who will become your friends.
  • You learn more about our community and its needs.
  • You improve your communication with staff members.
  • You gain awareness of how the program works.
  • You become a Thrive to Five ambassador, and learn how to explain Head Start and the other early learning program models to others.

Who can join Policy Council?

Basically, parents elect parents to represent them on the Policy Council. Each site location offers a parent committee for actively enrolled families. The parent committee will elect a parent from each site to represent them on the Policy Council starting in October.

  • Please let you Family Liaison or Early Learning Coordinator know you are interested in joining the Parent Committee. These meetings start the week of Monday, September 21, 2020.
  • Don’t know your Liaison? Contact Bobbie Frick at Bfrick@caplanc.org for help.
  • Policy Council reps are elected at the first parent committee meeting NEXT WEEK.

What happens at the Policy Council?

Policy Council meets once a month and is composed of parents like you. The first part of the monthly meeting is for conducting formal business-like voting on important policies that can change the way the program works. The second part of the meeting is dedicated to the council working together to make programming decisions. Your input and your vote matter!

The communities served by Head Start funding are diverse, and so are those communities’ needs. Let’s keep the tradition of Head Start Policy Council active and strong in Thrive to Five…

Join us in leading the way to brighter futures for our children!
