Honoring Military Service at CAP
country and community
Today, as we honor the dedication and selflessness of veterans and active military personnel in service to our country, we are reflecting, too, on their impact within our community. Our neighbors keep the nation safe in service, and in civilian life, their leadership, compassion, and unwavering spirit contribute to community well-being and inspire future generations.
Here at CAP, we talked with Alexis Shifflett, a Nutritionist with the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program, about her service with the Army National Guard and how it informs her work.
What motivated you to join the military, and how long have you been on active duty?
I have been in the Army National Guard for a little over five years. I come from a military family, which had an influence on my choice to join, as well as the benefits that come along with being a service member. I also wanted to do something with purpose. It has been a great experience overall, and I would do it all over again if I had to!
How has your military training and experience influenced your approach in the work you do for CAP?
My military experience has influenced my work here at CAP by allowing me to have excellent teamwork and time management skills, and I have also worked with many different people from all over the world and from different backgrounds.
What are the most rewarding experiences you have had while serving in the military and while working here?
My most rewarding experience from working at CAP is being able to help our participants use their benefits to their full potential, and as easily as possible, while giving them guidance on their health and nutrition journey through new ideas, recipes, and facts.
My most rewarding experience from the military is putting on the uniform and being trained for any situation that may arise and to serve the country we live in, as well as our friends, family, and acquaintances around us. I have been able to travel to a few destinations for these specialized trainings, including overseas to Africa last year. My specialized job in the military is in field artillery as a cannon crew member.
Thank you for your service, Alexis! We are grateful to have you on the CAP team, and to veterans and active military personnel who make our community a better place for everyone in it.
